Warning Signs & Red Flags

Not every sign means trafficking, but patterns + control + fear can signal serious risk. If you’re unsure, use the Resources page to connect with professionals.

Behavior & emotions

  • Seems fearful, anxious, hypervigilant, or unusually withdrawn
  • Avoids eye contact; appears coached on what to say
  • Cannot speak for themselves; someone else answers everything
  • Sudden changes in behavior, attendance, or routine
  • Shows signs of trauma, depression, or extreme stress

Situation & control

  • Not allowed to come/go freely
  • Doesn’t control money, phone, ID, or transportation
  • Lives/works where security prevents leaving
  • Has few personal items; belongings may be held by someone else
  • Works excessively long hours, unusual schedules, or multiple locations

Online grooming & digital risks

  • Secret online relationship; pressure to keep it hidden
  • Requests for personal photos, location, or private conversations
  • Promises of gifts/money/travel in exchange for “favors”
  • Threats to share images or messages (blackmail)
  • Sudden new “older friend” who becomes controlling

Safe response (what to do)

  1. Don’t confront a suspected trafficker.
  2. Prioritize safety for yourself and the person at risk.
  3. Document concerns (dates/places) if safe to do so.
  4. Contact professionals using the Resources page.
  5. If immediate danger: call 911.
